A widespread musical practice of the 19th and early 20th century was playing the piano for four hands, in order to be able to experience the most important symphonic works at home or in small groups. Brahms himself arranged his symphonies for four hands. Despite inevitable reductions, the full score contains the most important parameters of a work. The listener suddenly discovers many previously unheard details of the well-known orchestral work!
Brahms' first symphony was written in 1876 after 14 years of preparation. Hans von Bülow called it "the tenth" after Beethoven's 9 symphonies. But it differs significantly from Beethoven's style. It is dark, tragic, highly chromatic. Only the last movement is reminiscent of Beethoven's "Ninth" with its hymn-like, sublime theme in C major.
Haydn's symphonies, here the Hob. I: 45 "Farewell Symphony" in F sharp minor, were arranged for four hands by Hugo Ulrich. This symphony has become the symbol of a first labor dispute of musicians. In the last sentence, they leave the podium one after the other to protest against the working conditions under Prince Eszterházy, and with success!
The Osnabrück piano duo Hee Jung Kim and Peter Florian was founded in 2006 after the young Korean from the piano class of Prof. Peter Florian at the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences after successfully completing her diploma with distinction. Since then they have played regularly in Germany and in many countries in Europe and Asia. They have been invited to festivals in Russia, Turkey and South Korea.
