The blues in Germany has a large listenership and draws equally from the artists who represent it. Two flourishing names of the scene are those of the Westphalian blues artists Michael van Merwyk and Bad Temper Joe. The two giants, MvM measures 2 m, BTJ after all 1.95 m tall, have distinguished themselves over the years as independent personalities and musicians. The elder van Merwyk celebrates his 40th stage anniversary in 2024, the younger Joe in the same year 10 years since the release of his first album. Bad Temper Joe's musical career was shaped by Michael van Merwyk from the very beginning and he was always there to mentor and support him. With "Songs 'n' Slide" they now release their first album together via the Osnabrück record label Timezone. As it couldn't be more fitting for the raw and rousing acoustic blues of the two, the longplayer is released exclusively on 12'' vinyl. On his new album “The Bear” he returns to the blues with stories about the ups and downs of life. Regardless of whether he plays all alone with his beloved Dobro or is supported by his band, you can always feel a relaxed but powerful energy in his music. He recorded the album live in the studio with Christian Dozzler on piano and harmonica, Micha Maas on drums and Tobi Fleischer on bass. The first track, "Shotgun Boogie", is sarcastically devoted to the "shoot first, ask later" mentality that Michael experienced during his visit to Mississippi. But there are also love songs like the kitschy "Sometimes Angels Come In Red", classic blues pieces like "It's Fun Being Crazy", melodies with a folky touch like "Deep Blues Sea" and a homage to Michael's favorite slide player Tampa Red: a cover of "Dark & Stormy Night". On "The Bear" the focus is on Silde and Lap Steel guitars - uncompromising, atmospheric and concise. The music is a mixture of different genres from all over the world with a good portion of blues: Michael calls it "American Music - Euro Style". The album was recorded in the Watt Matters Studio in Bielefeld with just a homeopathic dose of overdubs and effects. Just a couple of musicians who sit together in one room and only need one take for each song. This creates closeness when listening, as if you were sitting in the middle of the musicians.

Since 1984 Michael van Merwyk has been internationally successful with numerous projects such as "MvM & Bluesoul", "Dozzler & Merwyk", "Garner & Merwyk" and many other experts in the blues scene. In 2011 he took first place with Bluesoul in the German Blues Challenge. This was followed in 2013 as the first European band to take second place at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis / USA, in which the quartet with their own Euro style prevailed in a field of 124 acts from 16 countries. Also this year van Merwyk had the honor of being invited to Memphis by the expert jury. In 2016, the jury and audience at the German Blues Awards voted him the best blues singer and best blues guitarist in Germany.

A Songster is something like a predecessor to the Bluesman, with one important difference: He doesn't just play the blues, but everything he wants - and that's exactly what Michael van Merwyk does on his new album “Songster”. The guitarist and singer has made 15 songs for which genre borders do not matter. David Bowie, Judas Priest, Depeche Mode, traditional folk songs from centuries past: Michael van Merwyk casually translates everything from the wrist into his own musical dialect.
He reduces the produced originals to gnarled acoustic versions: no sound too much or too little in the economical arrangements. Dr. John or Johnny Cash sing songs by Iron Maiden and The Clash, with John Lee Hooker or Blind Willie Johnson on guitar: that could sound like that - a little weird, but with fun. Michael van Merwyk developed his style where songsters are mostly: on the go. “My school was pubs, clubs and parties. I've been singing songs and telling stories for almost 35 years. I mostly play my own compositions, but also those of other musicians in their own versions. A good song is a good song. ”Recorded live at the Watt Matters studio in Bielefeld: no headphones, no tricks. This works and creates a feeling of closeness. With your eyes closed, you think you're sitting between the musicians. Michael van Merwyk gets everything out of the songs with a dark voice: He sings “Breaking The Law” octaves lower than Rob Halford from Judas Priest - but at least as expressively. 
“Songster” begins, we hear Steve Baker's longing harp, the Dobro comes along, and we are right in the middle of Bowie's “Heroes” - an incredibly soulful version of the masterpiece. “Should I Stay or Should I Go” is more relaxed than with The Clash, but has the same drive thanks to the minimalist accompaniment of drummer Micha Maas and Klaas Wendling on the double bass. Michael van Merwyk also produces full energy solo: an experienced live performer plays here who knows how to get people off their chairs alone. Songsters like Mississippi John Hurt, Big Bill Broonzy or Lead Belly played for every audience and had the right sound for every location. Michael van Merwyk stands in her tradition: he plays in front of blues listeners, at singer / songwriter festivals and in pubs and varies his repertoire as he likes. Nothing is styled and optimized here. This is about the music - and about getting it to the people.

In 2011 Michael van Merwyk made his debut with his top-class band Bluesoul, around two and a half years ago. You should keep that in the back of your mind and, if necessary, read aloud every now and then if you feel disbelief at how Bluesoul spent these two years. The quartet played its way into an international league from scratch, with this formation alone van Merwyk is now releasing the third record. In 2013 there was a sensation that cannot or should not be downplayed at all. At the 29th International Blues Challenge in Memphis / Tennessee, the world's largest musicians' competition, Bluesoul was the first European band in the 29-year history of the competition to reach the finals. Your "American Blues - Eurostyle" struck a nerve with the decorated jurors in the motherland, with Bluesoul everything simply and simply fits together too well.

Bluesoul manages the apparently paradox of modern and tradition-conscious guitar music without ever drifting into solo complacency - there is no need for name dropping with references or influences, Merwyk is without a doubt a songwriter with his own identity.

The much acclaimed debut “New Road” was followed in 2014 by the acoustic EP “Ease My Pain”, recorded in record time, on which the band sound is enriched with mandolin and banjo. Drummer Bernhard Weichinger sees the cajon, snare and cymbal as a reduced, effective backdrop Jochen Bens' and Merwyk's eloquently interlocked guitars, while, not least, Olli Gee's masterful bass playing, thankfully, everything sounds so wonderfully easy. And every child knows that make it look easy is incomparably easy. So now follows on February 27th, 2015 with “New Shoes” on GrooveStew Records, the third outing of the busy band. There's a reunion with the EP's “Happy Man” and the electric garb looks great on him.
In terms of sound and play, Bluesoul deliver their very own "American Blues - Eurostyle" in 2015. The heavyweight title track comes towards you as a Catfish Blues Jam, the giant from Rheda intones threateningly and threatened, "Heal My Wounds" underlines that you are dealing with a sensitive singer and lyricist who is generous enough to let us - the listeners - in . His powerful voice covers a spectrum from ballad-like, clear singing to Waitsesquem rumble. The depth of his songs and lyrics is conclusively staged with adequate vocal finesse. The blues vice world champions present their second CD "Ease My Pain". With their fresh and independent “American Blues - Euro Style”, MvM & Bluesoul attracted the attention of listeners and judges from the start in Memphis at the International Blues Challenge (IBC). They did it: after almost 20 years, the wild Westphalians have released their first CD called "The Snooks": "The Snooks - Greatest Hits". While other pop groups and pop starlets put out more or less superfluous CDs for years, only to bring out a "Greatest Hits" compilation after 20 years, the Snooks have decided to play concerts for 20 years and to celebrate with their audience and then to start with the Greatest Hits album. Für sein neues Album „Blues Everywhere I Go“ hat er seinen oldschool Deep Blues, Roots-Musik und Boogie mit einer Reihe erfahrener Musiker wie der Blues-Legende Abi Wallenstein aufgenommen. Die Musik wird von rauen Rhythmen, intensivem Blues-Gesang und wilden Slide-Gitarren getragen. Acht neue Songs aus MvM's Feder und eine Coverversion von Phil Wiggins "Cool Down" erzählen Geschichten vom Auf und Ab des Lebens und allen Schattierungen dazwischen...wie das Leben so spielt eben.

„Blues Everywhere I Go“ ist ein Song, den Michael van Merwyk geschrieben hat, als er beobachtete, wie die äußeren Umstände das Leben der Menschen auf der ganzen Welt bestimmen. Es wird immer schwieriger über die Runden zu kommen, die Familie zu ernähren und die Rechnungenzu bezahlen von Memphis bis Moskau und von Schweden bis Südafrika. MvM singt über die alltäglichen Sorgen, lindert den Schmerz des Zuhörers und am Ende verbreitet seine einzigartige Slidegitarre eine lebensbejahende Stimmung und gibt dem Zuhörer Energie an eine positive Zukunft zu glauben. 

In dem intensiven slow Blues "Raise Your Voice" singt MvM über Zivilcourage. Man muss in diesen Zeiten einfach für Menschenrechte aufstehen und die Stimme erheben. "Abi's Boogie" ist eine Homage an den grossartigen Abi Wallenstein, bei der er selber seine einzigartige Slide-Gitarre erklingen lässt. Während MvM bei „All Because Of You“ zu einem „Bo Diddley“-Rhythmus groovt und mit dem Verursacher seiner uncharmanten Lebensumstände abrechnet, heult die Bluesharp von Marc Breitfelder und Abi Wallenstein's dreckige Slidegitarre rundet den Song ab.

Das Album wurde an zwei Tagen mit zwei unterschiedlichen Bands in zwei verschiedenen Studios aufgenommen. Zu der "Hamburg Session" trafen sich Abi Wallenstein (Gitarre), Martin Röttger (Drums), Georg Schroeter (Piano), Marc Breitfelder (Harp) und MvM in den Hamburger HOME-Studios. Bei der "Bielefeld Session" ging MvM mit seinen Wegbegleitern Ollie Gee (Bass), Ollie Spanuth (Drums) und dem charmanten Duo "White Coffee" (Background Gesang) ins "Watt Matters Studio".

Herausgekommen ist ein spannendes, raues und modernes Blues-Album mit markanter Stimme, sattem groove und viel Slide-Gitarre. Und das alles mit dem unverkennbaren musikalischen Stempel von Michael van Merwyk. Der Zuhörer wird sich nach dem Hören besser fühlen und seinen Blues an der Garderobe abgeben.
